What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy focuses on skills for the job of living. “Occupation” refers to an activity which “occupies” a person’s time. For kids, occupations include play, socialization, self-care, and school performance. Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on helping children gain the skills needed for these daily occupations.

Occupational therapy uses purposeful goal-directed activities to improve a child’s performance in a variety of areas (fine and visual-motor skills, self-help skills, postural stability, sensory integration, motor planning, coordination, social interactions, and play abilities). For children, therapeutic intervention is primarily achieved through play which helps enhance the child’s engagement and involvement in therapy.
